Book Review: More than a Bucket List

If you haven’t written a bucket list, this book will make you write one. Toni Birdsong suggests many things to see and do but overall, the book is a rule for life; to pursue our dreams, to be kind to one another, to be happy, to live a life of meaning and purpose.

Birdsong’s list inspires the heart as one is asked to make love a habit; energizes you to take a one day trip to a place completely new; relieves your stress and suggest that you live with a sense of surprise and expectation; challenges youto make an anonymous donation to a worthy cause; among others.

Aside from the very many creative things she suggests in the book, I especially loved two things. The first is her suggestion to make a reverse bucket list. Instead of listing the things we want to do, why not list those that we have already accomplished? This makes real sense as too many times, we complain about what we do not have or have not achieved that we forget to be grateful. The second is the real life challenge at the end of each chapter. These challenges are mostly about what we can do for others. Most people think bucket lists are just random things that one can do to make the most of life. What Birdsong adds however is the reminder that giving not receiving, makes life full and overflowing. It’s what we do for others and not what we get from them that gives our life meaning and purpose.

This is a fun book that is better read slowly and in between the many things that keep us busy every day. It would also be a great gift for the coming holidays; something that can inspire as well as make people reach out and make a difference in someone else’s life.
