In the beginning I was just ONE
Born in a hospital full of people I didn’t know
A small and helpless little babe I was
Cried my heart out, what did anyone care?
But someone cared and they brought me home
These TWO people I called Mom and Dad
They fed me, clothed me and loved me
Taught me everything I needed to know.
Growing up I thought I was just one
But there were THREE others just like me
My sisters and my brother, whom I loved and fought with,
But whom I continue to cherish to this day.
In school, we were known as the Famous FOUR
Friends through thick and thin, despite snags and twigs
We looked out for each other because that’s what we thought we were
Best friends forever.
But separate paths our lives went
College, boyfriends, migration – ripped us far apart
Misunderstanding and jealousy – wounded our hearts
In FIVE little counts, our friendship sailed off, we were friends no more.
Growing up was fun, it was an age of discovery
Despite life’s pitfalls, SIX important things were learned
Harmony, balance, sincerity; truth, love and forgiveness
Little did I know, it was good to build life on these.
Life went on and SEVEN little dreams were written
Gain knowledge, acquire wisdom, seek out the truth,
Stimulate the imagination, act with conscious thought
Live with what is enough, hope for what is yet to come.
Today, each new day brings something new
EIGHT old friends reconnected, such a happy occurrence
We’ve come full circle, neither perfect nor complete
Yet a symbol of new life, of what it can still become.
I look at my life and wonder what I could bring to the world
For all the NINE gifts received; Family, Home, Friends and Happiness
Security and Peace of Mind, Faith, Hope and Love
I need to live with more purpose and passion as it’s time to give back.
