Ten things I wish I learned early in life

I think there comes a stage in our life when we recall the many things that make us into the persons we are today.  We realize that despite the pain, the loneliness or the discomfort these experiences brought us, life couldn’t have dealt with us any better (or worse) for us to learn what we needed to know.

Looking back though, there are some things I wish I learned early. Things such as...

1. Play and have fun
I didn’t grow up believing that having fun can actually be a way of life. I did not realize then that play is necessary if we are to learn most of life’s lessons.

2. Dream
...someone asked me what I dreamt of becoming. The question caught me off guard. I was puzzled. I didn’t think it possible until sometime later, I realized, what is life if we don’t dream?

3. Love can be given in so many different ways
...we can never dictate how another person ought to love us. Love can be expressed and given in so many different ways.

4. Life is not about me
With or without me, life happens because life is not about me! There are so many things that are much bigger or more important than I am.

5. The importance of choice
Life may be a lot of things but what happens or do not happen to us is the result of our own choices. That’s how important choices are and just how powerful we truly are.

We are happy when we decide to be happy -- wherever we are, whatever our situation is, whatever stage in our life we find ourselves in.

...it is good to be right. But being right is not enough because being right is not what makes us human. What makes us truly human is love. And to love means knowing how to be kind.

...forgiving those who offended me made me realize that while they may have taken away something from me, they provided me with life lessons I wouldn’t have learned any way else.

By painting a picture of the future we wish to have in our mind, we can will ourselves to do whatever is necessary to achieve that future.

...we are not meant to be alone in this planet. To keep our relationships and maintain their harmony, I’ve learned that it is best to let things slide.

On second thought, had I learned any of these earlier than I ought to have, life wouldn't be half as fun, wouldn't it?
